Abstract:
The control of nonmetallic materials is a key issue in assuring the astronaut safety and the success of the mission. This paper analyzes the main factors of the control, including the material selection criteria in the ground stage, and the method of the control of in-flight materials. Specific tests are carried out for verifying a particular performance of a certain kind of material, such as the combustibility, the outgassing, and the mass loss. The recommended list of qualified materials is established.
