Abstract:
This paper reviews the research and development of the structural design and the selection of materials for the covers of inflatable lunar habitat (ILH) is reviewed, including the developing history of ILH, the structural design schemes and the corresponding materials selections. Focus is placed on the applications of polymers in the structural design of the ILH covers, with regard to the protective layer against the micrometeoroid and orbital debris (MMOD), the thermal micrometeoroid cover (TMC), the fabric barrier, the multilayer insulation (MLI), and the airbags. Finally, it is suggested that the research and development of corresponding polymer candidates should be boosted in China in preparing for the plan of ILH in the near future.
