Abstract:
As the service cube-sats in orbit might likely bring about a sharp increase of the amount of space debris, it is urgent to develop a rapid de-orbiting technology targeting for cube-sats. The drag sail technology can be used for de-orbiting the CubeSats in the LEO orbit by deploying a large-area sail film to increase the thin air resistance on the CubeSat. This paper reviews the characteristics of the launched drag sail devices, the key technologies of the structural design, and the related space environmental simulation tests. Some suggestions are made for the future development of the drag tail technology.
